Welcome to the Knights of Columbus Holy Family Council 14712, based out of Holy Family Church in Nutley, New Jersey.

The Knights of Columbus is the world’s largest Catholic, family, fraternal, service organization, and as a local council of Knights, we are men of faith committed to serving our church and community through the virtues of charity, unity, fraternity, and patriotism.

Please utilize this site for more information about the Knights of Columbus, the programs being sponsored by the Holy Family Council, and the benefits of joining our organization.

Our History
On October 2, 1881, a group of men met in the basement of St. Mary’s Church on Hillhouse Avenue in New Haven, Connecticut. Called together by their 29-year-old parish priest, Father Michael J. McGivney, these men formed a fraternal society that would one day become the world’s largest Catholic family fraternal service organization.

They sought strength in solidarity, and security through unity of purpose and devotion to a holy cause: they vowed to be defenders of their country, their families, and their faith.

Their efforts came to fruition with the incorporation of the Knights of Columbus on March 29, 1882.

Since those humble but promising beginnings in New Haven, the Knights of Columbus has grown to over 1.7 million members, serving their church and communities in over 14,000 local councils.

On March 1, 2009, the Holy Family Council, number 14712, was officially chartered by the Supreme Council of the Knights of Columbus. We began our work with 31 men committed to their faith, their families, their community, and their country, and we have continued to grow not only in numbers but in our desire to give glory to God and to serve those in need.

What We Do
In 2008 alone, the Knights of Columbus contributed more than 68 million volunteer service hours to charitable causes. In the past decade, the Knights of Columbus has donated more than $1.325 billion to charity.

Members of Holy Family Council 14712 have the opportunity to contribute to these staggering numbers by volunteering to support service projects, fundraisers, and other initiatives.

Our council maintains that Knights are men of action — not meetings. While meetings are an important component of our work, we meet as a whole council only once per month, for about 90 minutes.

These monthly meetings enable us to be organized about the work before us. Generally, we schedule at least one charitable project per month. These projects can range from supporting a local soup kitchen to raking leaves for senior citizens to raising money for young mothers who have chosen life for their children.

On the First Friday of each month, we sponsor Eucharistic Adoration through the night into Saturday morning. This monthly tradition has been both a source of spiritual growth for our council and a service to those who cannot otherwise visit the chapel for Adoration during the day.

Throughout the year, we also sponsor a few projects that require more long-term planning. For instance, our council organizes a bus trip to the annual March for Life in Washington, DC, and we host an annual Columbus Day Dinner to raise money for charitable initiatives.

While some of our members are able to contribute more of their time than others, whether a Knight is giving three hours a month or three hours a year, he is helping to make a tangible difference in his church and community.
